The House Education Committee has voted to advance legislation proposed by Representative Jason Ortitay aimed at increasing awareness of eating disorders among children. This bill, known as House Bill 190, seeks to ensure that parents of students in grades six through twelve receive educational information about eating disorders. The information would be distributed annually via email, first-class mail, or the school district's website.

Representative Ortitay expressed his ongoing commitment to this issue: “Since 2021, I have been sponsoring legislation to draw attention to this serious issue,” he stated. He further noted the urgency due to the impact of social media on body image and eating disorders: “There is no time for delay as social media use continues to grow, which contributes to body dissatisfaction and eating disorders."

Ortitay emphasized the importance of parental awareness: "As a father of two young girls, it is vital parents have the tools to quickly identify eating disorders and know what resources are available to get help.”

Previously, Ortitay's bill passed in the House but did not progress in the Senate. He remains hopeful that during this legislative session it will reach the governor’s desk for approval.

The next step for House Bill 190 is consideration by the full House.
