Rep. Jason Ortitay from Washington/Allegheny has expressed strong opposition to a recent proposal by Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, which suggests a significant increase in property taxes. The proposal aims to address a budget deficit and support increased government spending.
Ortitay criticized the timing of the proposal, highlighting current economic challenges faced by residents. "In a time when inflation has spiraled out of control, people are fighting to keep their heads above water," he stated. He pointed out that rising costs for essentials like groceries and gas have put many households under financial strain.
He further argued that the proposed tax hike would disproportionately affect seniors on fixed incomes, potentially making homeownership less attainable for first-time buyers and increasing rent for tenants. "Seniors on fixed incomes have seen their retirement savings eroded by inflation, and this tax increase could push them past the point of no return," Ortitay noted.
The 46th Legislative District, represented by Ortitay, includes parts of Allegheny County such as South Fayette Township and the boroughs of McDonald and Oakdale. As budget hearings on this proposal begin, Ortitay urged residents in these areas to voice their concerns: “As budget hearings begin on this proposal, these residents should voice their concerns and ensure their voices are heard.”
The district also covers several townships and boroughs in Washington County. Residents concerned about the potential impact of this tax increase can contact Representative Jason Ortitay through his media contact Tracy Polovick at 717-260-6358 or via email at tpolovick@pahousegop.com.
