Reps. Bud Cook, Andrew Kuzma, Natalie Mihalek, Tim O’Neal, and Jason Ortitay have issued a statement in response to charges against Washington County Controller April Sloane. Sloane faces two counts of felony animal cruelty related to the death of her dog.
The representatives expressed their dismay over the allegations. "Every elected official should be held to a high standard. We were shocked and appalled to learn that April Sloane has been charged with felony animal cruelty as a result of the death of her dog," they stated.
They emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged crimes while acknowledging the importance of due process. "Washington County House Republicans call for a full and thorough investigation into the alleged crimes. Obviously, in this country, there is an important due process that must take place. However, we unequivocally condemn the alleged actions and hope that any and all responsible parties are held accountable."
The delegation also highlighted their stance on animal welfare: "All animals deserve to be treated with decency. We are extremely disappointed that a local elected official is being accused of such a despicable act."
They concluded by expressing support for law enforcement and anticipation for the judicial process's outcome: "We support local law enforcement and look forward to the completion of the judicial process."
