Rep. Valerie Gaydos of Allegheny has expressed her opposition to the recently approved $45.5 billion state budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year. She voted against the budget, citing concerns about overspending and inadequate savings for future economic downturns.

"While there are many positive things in this spending plan, overall, the budget spends more than what the government is projected to bring in. That is simply irresponsible," Gaydos stated. She emphasized that the 6% increase in spending could lead to depleting emergency reserves and potential tax hikes.

Gaydos also criticized the budget for not prioritizing education reforms she supports. "This budget falls short of completing critical steps toward a child-first, family-focused education," she said. She pointed out that removing $100 million intended for children in low-performing schools was unacceptable and would have hindered opportunities provided by programs like the PA Award for Student Success (PASS) scholarship.

The representative concluded by reaffirming her commitment to protecting taxpayers as one of her top priorities.
