HARRISBURG – Legislation to establish a state-paid family leave program was approved by the Senate Labor and Industry Committee today, according to the committee chair and sponsor of the bill, Sen. Devlin Robinson (R-37).

Senate Bill 580 would create a fund to pay benefits to workers when they take leave for major life events, such as the birth or adoption of a child or to care for a family member with a serious medical condition. The bill establishes criteria to qualify for leave, sets a formula to determine wage replacement benefits, and provides a framework for program administration.

“Everyone is going to have to care for a sick parent or spouse, welcome the birth or adoption of a child or deal with their own personal health challenges,” said Robinson. “This bill will allow them to do so while maintaining a steady source of income and protecting their job.”

Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have enacted paid leave programs.

The bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
