On April 8, 2024, Rep. Andrew Kuzma from Pennsylvania announced plans to host a free shredding event for residents in the 39th Legislative District. The event, aimed at helping individuals safeguard against identity theft, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 20, at the Elizabeth Borough Volunteer Fire Company.
Representative Kuzma expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event again, stating, "Last year’s event drew a large crowd, and I am happy to offer this opportunity again." He emphasized the importance of securely destroying personal documents, noting, “One way to protect oneself is to destroy personal documents and not just throw them in the trash. I hope this event not only prevents identity theft, but also prompts people to think about steps they can take to safeguard their information.”
The shredding event will run from 10 a.m. to noon at 101 S. First St., Elizabeth, and will accept all paper documents. Each household is allowed to bring no more than three brown paper grocery bags or open small cardboard boxes, with bags preferred over boxes. Large binder clips or hardbound covers will not be accepted, and materials thicker than 1-inch will need to be broken down.
In addition to document shredding, the event will also feature collections for dry goods for the food pantry and old medication by the police department. The 39th Legislative District includes various townships and boroughs in Allegheny and Washington Counties.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the shredding event to take proactive steps in protecting their personal information.
