North Fayette Township issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.

Merril Hoge Find A Way Speech Benefit for Mike Hayes & Family

Join us on Wednesday, August 18th at West Allegheny High School for Merril Hoge's Find A Way inspirational speech. All proceeds will benefit North Fayette police officer Mike Hayes & Family.

Officer Mike Hayes has spent his entire professional life supporting local communities and has served the past 25-years in his beloved hometown area of North Fayette Township.

Mike’s favorite part of being a North Fayette Township Police Officer was serving as the School Resources Officer at his school alma mater, West Allegheny High School. For the past 5-years, Mike has worked to keep students in that school safe. His sincere influence and guidance within West Allegheny High School has built a strong rapport with students, educators, and the community.

Last September, Mike was diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment and is unable to work and serve the community he loves. Mike’s wife Jennifer is also battling a health issue and is undergoing treatment for leukemia. Mike and Jennifer have two children, Courtney and Michael Jr., and Michael Jr. suffers with an adolescent diabetes condition.

The cumulative effects of health issues that the Hayes Family are dealing with are also impacting them financially, as medical bills pour in and Mike is unable to work. What was Mike’s plan to continue to work beyond 2022 (when he would be eligible for a department pension) and serve the community he loves, has now changed. Now Mike’s job is to fight cancer and remain alive.
