Rep. Valerie Gaydos of Allegheny has expressed concerns over the recent passage of a Tax Code Bill by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In her statement, Gaydos criticized the bill for lacking negotiation and balance, stating that it unfairly benefits certain groups such as marijuana growers, the city of Reading, and the movie industry.
Gaydos emphasized that she does not support large corporate tax breaks at a time when small businesses are still recovering from the economic impact of COVID-19 shutdowns. She noted that inflation continues to affect purchasing power and urged for renewed negotiations to create legislation that serves all Pennsylvanians fairly. "Government should not be picking winners and losers," she stated.
Highlighting her priorities, Gaydos mentioned her focus on reducing costs for residents, bolstering the economy, ensuring safe communities, and enhancing education centered on children and families.
She described the current legislative approach as irresponsible, warning that passing bills back and forth between chambers could prolong budgetary deadlock and risk funding for essential services like hospitals, 911 centers, tobacco settlement allocations, community colleges, and public transportation systems.
Despite voting against it, House Bill 1219 was narrowly approved by a vote of 102-101 in the House. The bill now awaits consideration in the Senate.
