Pennsylvania women veterans are encouraged to register for a state Capitol ceremony celebrating their service, as announced by Sen. Devlin Robinson (R-37). The registration deadline for the event, which will take place at noon on Monday, June 10, is April 5. The ceremony aims to honor female veterans and their family members, showcasing an exhibit featuring photos and biographies of women who have served in the armed forces.
"June 12 is not a separate Veterans Day. It recognizes the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Act by President Harry S. Truman in 1948,” highlighted Robinson. “It is the day to honor and remember the date that women were officially welcomed into the ranks and recognized for their bravery, heroics, service and sacrifice to the Republic since before its founding.”
The event is open to grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, and other female family members who have served in various military conflicts throughout history. Interested veterans are encouraged to register and submit their materials before the April 5 deadline by visiting the specified registration link.
The importance of recognizing women's contributions to the military was underscored by the fact that women were not officially acknowledged as military members or veterans until 1948. The significance of their bravery, heroism, service, and sacrifice to the nation has been a vital part of American history.
The first Women Veterans Day Capitol exhibit took place in 2023, following the enactment of legislation designating June 12 as Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania annually. It is projected that by 2040, women will make up 17% of the total veteran population.
