Abraham Lincoln Elementary School recently issued the following announcement.

Softball for Soldiers: June 11

George Reganick, in conjunction with American Legion Post 760, will host a charity softball tournament to benefit veterans at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 11, on the ballfield at Neil Armstrong Middle School [5800 Murray Ave, Bethel Park, PA 15102].  The proceeds will go towards the purchase of wreaths to be placed on the graves of all of the veterans buried at Bethel Cemetery [2999 Bethel Church Rd., Bethel Park, PA 15102].

The game, which will honor five specific veterans including 95 year-old World War II veteran, Charles Zukauckas (U.S, Army), who will be at the game. The other honorees include the late Amerigo Casini (U.S, Army, World War II), Lawrence Cullen (U.S. Army Air Corps, World War II), John Van Tol (U.S. Navy Commander, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War) and John McClellan (U.S. Army, the Vietnam War).

Reganick, who is himself a veteran of the Vietnam War, said he felt an obligation to hold the game after learning that so many veterans were buried at Bethel Cemetery but whose graves were not adorned with wreaths.  “These men gave so much to our country and I just felt a tremendous obligation to them and their families to properly honor their sacrifices, even if it is only in some small way,” he said.

In addition to the game, there will be plenty of concessions as well as a few auction items and a 50/50 raffle.
