The House Education Committee has voted to advance legislation introduced by Representative Jason Ortitay aimed at increasing awareness of eating disorders in children. Ortitay, representing the 46th Legislative District which includes parts of Washington and Allegheny counties, has been advocating for this cause since 2021.
This renewed effort, outlined in House Bill 190, proposes that schools must provide educational information about eating disorders to parents of students in grades six through twelve. The bill specifies that this information should be accessible through email, first-class mail, or posted on the school district’s website.
Reflecting on past efforts, Ortitay stated, “Last session, my bill passed the House but stalled in the Senate. I am hopeful we can get it to the governor’s desk this legislative session and see it signed into law.” He emphasized the urgency, noting, “There is no time for delay as social media use continues to grow, which contributes to body dissatisfaction and eating disorders.”
The bill, which has cleared the committee stage, will now proceed to the full House for consideration. Ortitay's legislative district covers regions in both Washington and Allegheny counties, including South Fayette Township and boroughs like McDonald and Oakdale.
Ortitay is motivated by his personal experience as a father, saying, “As a father of two young girls, it is vital parents have the tools to quickly identify eating disorders and know what resources are available to get help.”
