The Senate Labor and Industry Committee, led by Sen. Devlin Robinson, has moved forward with legislation to provide clarity on the Unemployment Compensation (UC) Law concerning claimants who may intentionally discourage their own hiring.
Senate Bill 153, proposed by Sen. Michele Brooks, specifies that declining a job interview or employment referral without valid reasons is considered a refusal of work and could lead to disqualification from receiving benefits.
"As chair of the Senate Labor and Industry Committee, I am dedicated to ensuring our unemployment compensation laws are as clear and concise as possible," stated Robinson. "This bill would ensure that compensation is given to claimants who are actively seeking new employment. I appreciate Sen. Brooks introducing this legislation and am pleased to support it."
Currently, UC law mandates that claimants must apply for two jobs each week and complete one work search activity unless specific exceptions apply.
The proposed legislation does not introduce new policies but seeks to clarify the existing intent of the UC law.
The bill will now proceed to the full Senate for further consideration.
