The House Education Committee has moved forward with Representative Jason Ortitay's legislation aimed at increasing awareness of eating disorders among children. The bill, which has been in development since 2021, seeks to address the growing concern of body dissatisfaction and eating disorders exacerbated by social media use.
"Since 2021, I have been sponsoring legislation to draw attention to this serious issue," Ortitay stated. He expressed optimism about the bill's progress, noting that it previously passed the House but did not advance in the Senate. "I am hopeful we can get it to the governor’s desk this legislative session and see it signed into law," he added.
House Bill 190 proposes that schools provide educational information about eating disorders annually to parents of students in grades six through twelve. This information would be distributed via email, first-class mail, or posted on school district websites.
The bill will now proceed to the full House for further consideration. The 46th Legislative District represented by Ortitay includes several townships and boroughs in Allegheny and Washington counties.
