Rep. Valerie Gaydos of Allegheny has responded to Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal for the fiscal year 2023-24, which totals $45.8 billion and represents a 5.9% increase from the current year.
"The governor’s budget address to the General Assembly is a starting point," Gaydos stated. She emphasized that the proposal initiates a series of hearings where detailed discussions will shape the final budget.
Gaydos acknowledged some positive aspects of the plan, including tax breaks for students, teachers, first responders, and senior citizens. However, she noted concerns about funding these initiatives amidst a structural deficit.
"In addition, the budget would not create any new taxes," she added. Instead, it suggests shifting tax burdens within society—a matter that requires careful examination.
The proposal includes increased education funding and an expansion of the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program to aid more residents in need.
Gaydos highlighted an important remark by Governor Shapiro: "we should not have to choose between protecting the environment and jobs – we can do both!" She expressed agreement with this sentiment.
She stressed that Pennsylvania's budget needs discipline to ensure economic recovery without imposing additional debts on families and future generations.
"We must open the lines of communication so we can craft a fiscally responsible budget," Gaydos concluded. She looks forward to collaborating with colleagues and the governor on a beneficial outcome for all Pennsylvanians.
