Rep. Jason Ortitay of Washington and Allegheny counties has expressed concerns over a proposal by Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato to significantly increase property taxes. The proposed hike, exceeding 46%, aims to address a budget deficit and fund increased government spending.
Ortitay argues that the timing is problematic due to ongoing inflationary pressures affecting households. "In a time when inflation has spiraled out of control, people are fighting to keep their heads above water," he stated. He emphasized that the rising costs of essentials like groceries and gas are already straining family budgets.
The representative highlighted potential adverse effects on various demographics, particularly seniors on fixed incomes whose savings have been impacted by inflation. He warned that homeownership could become more challenging for first-time buyers and suggested renters might face higher rents as landlords pass on increased tax burdens.
Ortitay's district includes parts of southern Allegheny County, such as South Fayette Township and the boroughs of McDonald and Oakdale. He urged residents to participate in upcoming budget hearings to voice their opinions: "As budget hearings begin on this proposal, these residents should voice their concerns and ensure their voices are heard."
The 46th Legislative District also covers areas in Washington County, including Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant, North Strabane townships, and Canonsburg, Houston, and McDonald boroughs.
