Rep. Jason Ortitay has voiced his opposition to a recent proposal by Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, which seeks to increase property taxes by more than 46%. The proposed tax hike is intended to address a budget deficit and cover increased government spending.
Ortitay expressed concern over the impact of this proposal on residents, particularly during a period of high inflation. "In a time when inflation has spiraled out of control, people are fighting to keep their heads above water," he stated. He highlighted that essential costs like groceries and gas have surged, causing financial strain for many households.
The representative also pointed out the potential consequences for specific demographics, including seniors and prospective homeowners. "Seniors on fixed incomes have seen their retirement savings eroded by inflation, and this tax increase could push them past the point of no return," Ortitay noted. He warned that homeownership could become even less attainable for first-time buyers and renters might face higher rents as landlords pass on increased property taxes.
The 46th Legislative District represented by Ortitay includes parts of southern Allegheny County such as South Fayette Township and the boroughs of McDonald and Oakdale. As budget hearings begin on the proposal, Ortitay encouraged these residents to voice their concerns: "These residents should voice their concerns and ensure their voices are heard."
Ortitay's district also covers areas in Washington County, including Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant, North Strabane townships, and Canonsburg, Houston, McDonald boroughs.
