Good Afternoon Baldwin-Whitehall Community:

The Baldwin-Whitehall School District will hold a remote day of instruction on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

All district transportation is cancelled.  If your child attends a school other than the Baldwin-Whitehall School District, please contact that school for additional directions and information.

Steel Center is operating on a normal schedule and students can attend provided they have transportaion to and from the center.

After several meetings and discussion with our local law enforcement it has been determined that it would not be possible to safely transport students throughout the day.  The logistics associated with the funeral and procession for Officer Sean Sluganski will have great impact on the ability for vehicular (bus and passenger) traffic throughout the day.  While the funeral is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., processions of an anticipated 1,000 law enforcment officers from various locations in Pittsburgh will commence at 8:45 a.m.  Road closures throughout Baldwin, Brentwood, and surrounding areas will be numerous and last through 2:30 p.m.

Each school within the District will provide additional information related to the specific schedule and activities that will be occuring on Tuesday.  We also realize that Tuesday is Valentine's Day with all of the festivities that accompany that day.  Contingency plans will be communicated by each school as to the make-up date for those parties.

Due to traffic and congestion expected at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, donation will not be accepted there. If additional information regarding donations becomes available, the District will pass that information along.

Please know that this decision has not been made lightly and the impact on the community is fully understood. But after consultation with our police departments, I see no other option than to shift to remote and not provide any transportation for the day.

In closing, I hope that everyone can take time over the next several days to reflect on the recent events, extend prayers and thoughts to those that experienced great loss, and realize that we live in a wonderful community that supports and embraces those in need.

Sincerely,

Randal A. Lutz, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools

*Officer Sluganski's badge number was 1116. Buses 11 and 16 are being prepared by our Transportation Department to serve as shuttles for those attending Officer Sluganski's funeral.
