Senator Devlin Robinson hosted a press conference in Harrisburg, highlighting the achievements of Purple Star Schools in Pennsylvania. Attendees included representatives from Purple Star School districts such as West Allegheny, St. Patrick School, Carlisle, and Cumberland Valley.
During the event, Robinson expressed his enthusiasm for the schools present at the Capitol. “I am thrilled to host some of our purple star schools here at the Capitol today who are among the first to have this distinction,” he stated, voicing hopes for more schools across Pennsylvania to adopt the program.
The Purple Star Schools initiative provides support to military-connected children who frequently change schools due to their parents’ military duties. This designation is granted to Local Education Agencies and schools demonstrating a strong commitment to serving military families and students.
Dr. Katharine Roche, academic principal of West Allegheny High School, emphasized the importance of this program, noting, “This program is near and dear to our hearts. We have over 50 students with parents that are active military.”
In Pennsylvania, over 37,000 children have parents serving in the military. The Purple Star Schools program assists these students by offering resources for relocation, enrollment, social, and academic support, among other critical services.
Dr. Carrie Rowe, acting secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, commended the program’s impact, saying, “A military child will attend 6 to 9 schools in their schooling from kindergarten to 12th grade. Fortunately, in the commonwealth, we have a robust support network that will help these families with the struggles they face.”
Adjutant Gen. John Pippy also praised the initiative: “By having this program, you make it easier not only for the kids, but also for the families and the people who serve and work [in the military].”
Senators Pat Stefano and Doug Mastriano were present at the conference as well.
Schools interested in the Purple Star Schools program can apply via the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Applications opened on April 1, 2025, and further details are available at www.senatorrobinson.com/purplestarschools. Approved schools hold the designation for three years, with an option for renewal.
