Successful programs aimed at connecting veterans in Pittsburgh and beyond with healthcare and employment opportunities were discussed during a public hearing of the Senate Majority Policy Committee. The event was hosted by Senator Devlin Robinson (R-37) and chaired by Senator Dave Argall (R-29).

Senator Robinson highlighted the importance of supporting veterans as they transition back to civilian life, stating, “While serving our country, our service members gain valuable skills that can benefit the commonwealth after they complete their time in the military. By doing everything we can to help connect them with relevant roles and support them as they transition back to civilian life, we honor their sacrifices.”

Brigadier General Mark Goodwill from the Pennsylvania National Guard shared insights on how the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs supports returning veterans. Marc Migala from UPMC discussed efforts to provide healthcare services through VA medical centers, noting that since 2019, UPMC has expanded its Veterans Care Services across the state.

Representatives Sean Foley from Millwright Local 443 and Erick Dickson from Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters described initiatives like Helmets to Hardhats, which helps veterans find jobs in construction. Jack Lyden of Pittsburgh Hires Veterans detailed his organization’s success in placing veterans into jobs last year.

The hearing also featured input from Per Scholas representatives who have offered technical training to over 30,000 veterans without tuition fees since 1995.

Senator Argall emphasized the importance of supporting returning veterans: “Helping our veterans find meaningful employment and connecting them with available services is the least we can do when they return home to their families.”

Senator Doug Mastriano (R-33), chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, expressed gratitude for hosting this dedicated hearing. He remarked on ongoing legislative efforts such as Senate Bill 133 for expanding property tax exemptions for veterans and other supportive measures.

Video footage and written testimony from the event are available online.
